This wine has been created to commemorate the love shared by Lodovico Capponi and Maddalena Vettori in the middle of the 16th century. Whilst on his travels outside Florence, Lodovico made the acquaintance of Maddalena who, following the death of her father, had been promised in marriage to the son of her stepfather Piero Salviati. Although the designated bridegroom – Salviati’s son by previous marriage – died in battle, Salviati failed to accept his stepdaughter’s love for Lodovico and banished Maddalena to a convent. Lodovico’s imploring requests for the hand of Maddalena continued to be ignored. After some time, Maddalena managed to flee from the confines of the convent and to serve as a lady-in-waiting to the Grand Duchess Eleonora di Toledo in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Because in those days, the ladies of the court were forbidden to go out alone, the two lovers were only able to exchange furtive glances whenever Maddalena was walking outside the palace grounds with the grand entourage accompanying Eleonora di Toledo. Lodovico bought a palazzo very close to the route of the daily court walks for that very reason. It did not take long for the grand duchess to notice the two young people’s looks of yearning, and so in the end it was thanks to Eleonora di Toledo that Piero Salviati agreed, after much hesitation, to the engagement of his stepdaughter Maddalena to Lodovico Capponi. The wedding ceremony took place at the Piazza Santa Trinita, still one of the squares of Florence, and it is reported that it rained confetti and the wine flowed freely. Castello della Paneretta became the married couple’s home, marking the beginning of the castle’s era of glory. L’amore wine, which is blended from equal quantities of the choicest Tuscan wine grape varieties, Sangiovese and Canaiolo, is dedicated to this great and passionate love. Sangiovese possesses a strong, elegant and determined character like Lodovico Capponi, while Canaiolo is harmonious and delightful in colour and fragrance like Maddalena Vettori. One can still feel the enchanting passion of their romance when savouring this premier wine. It is said that once two sweethearts sip L’amore wine, their love will last forever.
